is good. good morning. i'm meraryo mara schiavocampo. rivers are freezing in the boston area and in massachusetts, amazing pictures show river falls frozen solid. and here in new york, you can see the famous fountain in bryant park is covered in ice. we'll have much more on the deep freeze coming up in just a few minutes. in after math of thiing shootings in newtown, a new bill has been proposed this washington. dianne feinstein and other democrats talked about the bill that names more than 150 firearms including semiautomatic rifles and pistols and would ban ammunition clips holding more than ten rounds. but feinstein says the bill would exempt more than 2,000 models of hunting and sporting weapons and would not affect weapons americans own for home protection. the nra responded saying they are confident congress will reject it and feinstein herself

acknowledged the bill faces an uphill battle to win approval. the senate has approved moderate changes to its rules on filibusters. harry reid worked out deal with the republicans that will limit discussion on certain white house nominations, but it will not require senators to stay on the senate floor talking the whole time as some senators wanted. the changes were overwhelmingly approved. and now to a look at some stories that will be developing later this morning. vice president biden and cabinet secretaries and members of congress travel to virginia to a round table discussion on reducing gun violence. there is a new strain of a nasty stomach bug being called the ferrari of viruses. it's sweeping the globe. it's caused by the newwer norov it's highly contagious.

and protests are expected on the national mall for the annual march for life. tracie potts is live on capitol hill. this week marks the 40th anniversary of the roe v. wade decision that legalized abortion. are the protests expected to be larger than usual because of that? >> reporter: exactly. and that's why we're expecting so many people for the second time this week on the national mall. in fact the anniversary was the day after inauguration. so organizers moved march for life to friday. and in the last 40 years, a lot of the emotions and issues have not changed. what has changed is legislation. for the most part legislators, republicans, have enacted more than 150 laws restricting abortion. there are now 17 states that pay for abortion for low income women and of course federal funds are restricted there.

wae continue for s we continue to see demonstrations on both sides. but public opinion is pretty clear. 7 out of 10 said they want roe vs. wade abortion rights to remain the law of the land. today in addition to those thousands of people from around the country who plan to attend the event on the national mall, house speaker john boehner will be speaking, as well. >> tracie potts live in washington. thanks so much. manti te'o speaks. in his first on camera interview since the hoax story broke, he told katie couric he was not in on the prank and that he was a victim. he admitted to misleading journalists by sticking to the story after the fact saying he doesn't know what to do. te'o even played a voice mail message left for him by the unidentified woman. >> i'm just letting you know i got here and i'm getting ready for my first session and just calling to keep you posted. i miss you.

scrambled politics. at the republican national committee's winter meeting, louisiana governor bob pi engby called on big changes. he said there were too many strange comments in last year's campaign. >> we've got to stop being stupid party. i'm serious. it's time for a new republican party that talks like adults. it's time for us to articulate our plans and visions in real terms. >> and former house speaker newt gingrich said we need to learn to be the happy party. mark zuckerberg has sgied to help a republican facing releak next year. he'll host a fund-raiser for new jersey governor chris christie who he met in 2010 when zuckerberg donated $100 million to public schools in newark. bill and hillary clinton are reportedly house hunting for ocean front property in the hamptons on new york's long island. and speaking of rich, bill clinton's former vice president al gore is now worth about $300 million according to forbes

magazine after selling current tv to al gezira. gore is now richer than mitt romney. pete souza tweeted a new photograph of bo, the first dog, on the snow covered w40us lawn. maybe it can be used for next year's white house christmas card. and the buzz at the white house today was president obama being bothered by a fly during his news conference to announce two top financial regular la tore nominees. the fly darted around the president eye head and at one point landed right in the middle of his forehead. that's your morning dish of scrambled politics. that was a good photo. the weather story obviously will cause a lot of headics for people as you drive this morning and later came. first, it's cold once again as advertised. so this is a light fluffy snow. to the south we have to deal with freezing rain and ice.

the windchill, it's dangerous outside today at the bus stop or heading outside for any extended period of time from albany to boston northwards. also still pretty cold, windchills in the northern plains. so now for the though and ice and in some cases a little bit of freezing rain. we're looking at the freezing rain potential, areas of pink. so extreme northeast corner of arkansas and then a good chunk of northern alabama, northern georgia, you'll deal with freezing rain during 9 day today. so getting to school, work, no problem, but you could have coating of ice on any elevated surfaces throughout the afternoon. that includes atlanta. so deicing will also cause significant delays. everywhere in white has a chance for some snow. advisory level snow usually means about 1 to 3 inches. on the radar, it's a very wide system, but not strong. not going to be heavy amounts of snow. but the snow will start soon in chicago, snowing in many areas from milwaukee to green bay. and then all of this heads east

during the day today. again, not blockbuster snow amounts. at most we're talking in the appalachians possibly 3 to 5 inch, but most areas from philadelphia southwards town through virginia back through ohio, you'll be dealing with the possibility of again 1 to 2 fluffy inches of snow. the weekend forecast looks a lot quieter and also begins to do that warm up. i'll give you that forecast a little later. up next, medical science realizes star trek tractor beams. plus layoffs ahead for the airlines. why are the brits blowing up these trains? well, the answer may surprise you. and what to watch for on wall street this final friday in the month of january. my insurance rates are probably gonna double.

the warning follows the deadly attack in syria. and freezing rain closed the salt lake city airport. dozens of flights and hundreds of passengers were delayed for more than three hours. and 180 car accidents were reported, but there were no major injuries. in england, researchers are blowing up trains. controlled blasts of trains are conducted, and then they study data for better bomb proofing and safer in the future. and scientists in scotland and the czech republic said they demonstrated the first tractor beam. it can pull tiny particles of water towards the beam of light. and a man in turkey has set a world record for driving backwards. he's already driven twisting roads for 18 miles, but he wants to get to 60 miles to break the current 40 miles guinness record.

the dow opens at 13,825 after gaining 46 points yesterday. the s&p and nasdaq were mixed. overseas, the nikkei shot up 305 points, but the hang seng fell 18. turning to more business headlines. today, investors are going to want to keep a close eye on a few things. first, united airlines is going to chop about 600 jobs through buyouts and layoffs. net to netflix, shares jumped 42%. with strong quarterly earnings. after peaking in the $700 range, apple is down 36%. the question everyone is asking, how low will they go. next to new home sales which some estimate to be at 400,000 for december. if that number is accurate, it would be a very good sign for the economy. and i'm sure you've seen the frenzy over subway's one-inch short controversy. sandwich lovers aren't too

happy. and some filed class action lawsuits claiming the footlong is only 11 inches long. the suit says customers are owed a refund for the portion of the sandwich that they've not been receiving. subway has declined to comment on the lawsuit. a spokesman said the restaurant chain has redoubled the efforts to ensure consistency in every sandwich we have. straight ahead, a super size controversy surrounding the super bowl's superdome. plus, what is this, is it a bird, a plane, a man? we'll tell you. here is your first look at other news going on around america. fire broke out at a multifamily home in eastern massachusetts yesterday afternoon. firefighters from several companies helped everyone get out safe. now the red cross is helping those displaced by the fire. now, to our nation's capital where two united airlines planes clipped wings at dulles international airport. the flight arriving from brussels scraped the empty gate. and there were no reports of injuries. in michigan, an eighth grader with downs syndrome owned his 15 minutes while in uniform. owen grosser didn't get much playing time as the manager of the basketball team but for the final moment, the coach put owen on the court where he hit two three-pointers. the students launched a twitter campaign to get owen on espn' "sportscenter." good for him.

in new orleans, the king cakes, carrying on another tradition. operation we care has sent over 20,000 packages to troops overseas and on base since 2003. their way of saying thanks with patriotic cakes and boxes from children decorated. and the quantum key west regatta. dozens of teams around the world are braving sunny skies and 70 degree temperatures for the prestigious event which ends today. turning now to sports, we start with college basketball. michigan versus purdue. number two ranked michigan got 15 points from trey burke and they easily beat purdue 58-53. the wolverines are hoping to move up to number one next week since top ranked duke lost. now to the nba, toronto's demare derosen beat the buzzer. the raptors edged the atlanta magic 97-95.

at the australian tennis open, top ranked novak djokovic cruised to a win against spain's david ferrer. djokovic moves on to sunday's finals. well, a judge in new orleans says the city must scale back for that's called a clean zone around the superdome for super bowl week. a snowmobile wipeout. caleb moore crashed his moebl mobile. fortunately he was able to get up and walk away. and a strange object was seen at the pga insurance open at torrey pines in southern california. was it a bird, a plane, superman?

in houston, a veteran and marine lost his wife only weeks ago and came home monday to find his house burglared by two local teens. the father of the vandals didn't feel the arrest was enough, so he came to apologize personally to the veteran and volunteered his sons for the hard labor of cleaning up. sounds like a fair punishment.

loser, just sore. but the tweet of the week was this cheeky justin bieber photo. 33 million followers, bieber just barely beat out lady gaga as the most followed person on twitter. now to a firearms class in georgia where a group of seniors are taking aim. >> did i hit anything? >> luckily a train in madrid didn't hit anything after a woman fainted on to the track and was saved by an off duty officer. and the same goes for this camera person who got a close call with a stunt plane. >> a mmazing video there. if you're looking for entertainment, you might want to skip the movies this weekend. there are three new releases and none screened by critics. little buzz and little marketing will amount to a small take at the box office. "hansel and gretel witch hunters" turned out to be a real movie not just a practical joke. ensuring it will finish in first place.

some big "star wars" news, j.j. abrams is now said to be the director of the upcoming episode "seven" and recently in the star trek. and saying one man cannot direct both franchises. michael buble has big news of his own. the singer and his wife are expecting their first child. and they announced the news with the ultrasound video. 2013 will be a big year for buble he's also releasing his sixth album. and earlier this week, we told you about lindsay lohan turning down "dancing with the stars." well, now lance armstrong has also turned down the competition reality show. armstrong has reportedly been asked to join the show many times. stay tuned. way too early ostarts right now.
